Understanding Potential Side Effects and Risks

Medroxyprogesterone acetate (the active ingredient in Provera) can cause various side effects. Common ones include weight gain, mood changes (like depression or irritability), and irregular bleeding. Less frequent but more serious effects include blood clots, increased risk of stroke, and liver problems. Always discuss potential risks with your doctor before using Provera.

Blood Clots and Cardiovascular Issues

Provera, like other progestins, increases the risk of blood clots forming in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism). Symptoms of blood clots can include leg pain, swelling, shortness of breath, and chest pain. If you experience these, seek immediate medical attention. Women who smoke, are over 35, have a history of blood clots, or are immobile for extended periods are at heightened risk.

Liver Function

Rarely, Provera can affect liver function, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) or other liver-related symptoms. Regular liver function tests might be recommended if you’re taking Provera long-term. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop yellowing of your skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual fatigue.

Other Considerations

Allergic reactions are possible, manifested as rash, itching, or difficulty breathing. Inform your doctor about any allergies you have before taking Provera. Provera can also interact with other medications; disclose your entire medication list to your physician. Pregnancy is not recommended while taking Provera.
